Alcohol addiction – clinically known as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) – is a chronic, relapsing brain disorder characterised by an inability to control or stop alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. At Thamarai Healing Centre, we treat alcohol addiction not as a moral failing but as a treatable medical condition, combining evidence-based clinical care with a luxurious, private, and dignified recovery environment.
Alcohol Use Disorder is a pattern of alcohol consumption that involves problems controlling drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol, continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems, needing to drink more to get the same effect, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when rapidly decreasing or stopping drinking. Over time, repeated exposure to alcohol alters brain chemistry – particularly the dopamine reward pathway, GABA, and glutamate systems – making the disorder as much neurological as it is behavioural.
AUD exists on a spectrum, from mild to severe, and can affect anyone regardless of age, profession, or social standing. It is a disease of the brain, not a lack of willpower – and it is treatable with the right clinical support.
Alcohol addiction rarely appears overnight — it develops gradually across behavioural, physical, and psychological signs.
A formal diagnosis is made by a qualified psychiatrist or addiction medicine specialist. At Thamarai, every client undergoes a comprehensive clinical assessment aligned with internationally recognised diagnostic frameworks
Severity: Mild (2–3) · Moderate (4–5) · Severe (6+)
Harmful pattern of use — health or social harm without full dependence
Alcohol dependence— impaired control, alcohol taking priority over life, plus physiological features like tolerance and withdrawal, present over 12 months
Not every drinking problem requires residential rehabilitation — but professional inpatient care becomes necessary when:
A residential setting removes the individual from triggers and enabling environments, while offering 24/7 medical and psychological support – significantly improving the likelihood of sustained recovery.
Residential care removes the individual from triggers and enabling relationships, offering round-the-clock medical and psychological support.
Typical duration of stay: 4–12 weeks, individualised to severity of dependence and treatment response. Our clinical team reassesses regularly and adjusts the plan — never discharging on a fixed timeline.
When a person who has been drinking heavily suddenly reduces or stops intake, the brain’s rebound in central nervous system activity can cause a spectrum of withdrawal symptoms.
Anxiety, tremors, sweating, nausea, headache
Increased risk of hallucinations
Risk of withdrawal seizures
Peak risk of Delirium Tremens (DTs) — a medical emergency
Important: Severe withdrawal, particularly Delirium Tremens, can be fatal if unmanaged. Alcohol detox should never be attempted alone or “cold turkey.” This is why medically supervised detoxification is the safe, essential first step of treatment at Thamarai.
Recovery is a structured, personalised continuum of care — integrating medical, psychological, and holistic therapies.
The first stage of treatment. Conducted under 24/7 medical supervision, detox safely manages withdrawal symptoms using appropriate medication protocols (such as benzodiazepine tapering, vitamin/electrolyte correction, and monitoring for complications). Vital signs, hydration, and nutrition are closely monitored to prevent complications like seizures or Delirium Tremens.
One-on-one sessions with licensed psychologists help clients explore the root causes of their addiction – trauma, stress, co-occurring mental health conditions – and build healthier coping mechanisms.
CBT helps clients identify and restructure the thought patterns and beliefs that drive drinking behaviour. Clients learn to recognise triggers, challenge distorted thinking (e.g., “I can’t cope without a drink”), and develop practical strategies to interrupt the craving-to-drinking cycle.
MET is a client-centred approach that resolves ambivalence about quitting and strengthens the individual’s own internal motivation to change. Rather than confrontation, it uses reflective listening and collaborative goal-setting to help clients move from “I might need to change” to committed action.
Facilitated group sessions allow clients to connect with peers facing similar struggles, reducing shame and isolation. Group therapy builds accountability, social skills, and a sense of shared recovery – often reinforced through structured formats similar to 12-step or SMART Recovery models.
Addiction affects the entire family system. Structured family therapy sessions rebuild trust, improve communication, and educate loved ones on how to support recovery without enabling relapse.
As a luxury wellness-integrated centre, we complement clinical treatment with yoga, meditation, nutrition therapy, mindfulness training, and stress-management practices – supporting whole-person healing of body, mind, and spirit.
Mapping people, places, emotions, and situations that raise risk.
Practical strategies for managing cravings and high-risk moments.
Recognising early emotional and behavioural cues before a physical relapse.
Healthy daily habits, sleep, and stress management built into life after rehab.
Continued group or individual sessions after discharge.
A written, individualised action plan the client takes home.
Alcohol addiction is a chronic condition, similar in nature to diabetes or hypertension — manageable with ongoing commitment. With structured treatment, most individuals see significant improvement in health, relationships, and quality of life.
Recovery doesn’t end at discharge. Our aftercare programme protects the progress made during residential treatment.
Alcohol addiction is often called a “family disease” — it affects spouses, children, and parents emotionally, financially, and psychologically. Healing the family unit is central to lasting recovery.
Family education — understanding addiction as a medical condition, not a character flaw
Family therapy sessions — rebuilding communication and trust
Guidance on boundaries — supporting recovery without enabling
Codependency counselling — untangling wellbeing from a loved one’s behaviour
Family support groups — a safe space to share and be guided
Alcohol addiction is treatable. With medically supervised detox, evidence-based therapy, and a compassionate, luxurious environment, Thamarai Healing Centre offers a discreet, dignified path back to health.
